Recent Davenport High Grad Receives $500 Cash Scholarship for Duck Tape Tuxedo

July 19, 2022 - A recent Comal ISD graduate has won a $500 cash scholarship and has been named a runner-up in the 2022 Duck brand “Duct Tape Stuck at Prom” scholarship contest.

Kaleb Burch, 18, who graduated from Davenport High School in May, submitted his checker-board design tuxedo in March hoping to earn some scholarship money for college. As one of four runners-up, he also will receive a Duck Brand Prize Pack worth $100.

Encouraged by his mother to enter the national contest, Burch spent 30 hours creating his one-of-a-kind tuxedo, using 10 rolls of Duck tape. The final design features the crisp black and white checker-board pattern on the front with a colorful target highlighted on the back.

“I wanted to show that in a world that is often black and white, you can feel like a target is on your back if you are different,” explains Burch, who is attending the University of Texas at Tyler studying architecture.

Finding ways to stretch his creativity is something Burch has been doing for a long time. One of his favorite creative outlets is digital and traditional art. He encourages others to find whatever makes them happy and do it for themselves.
